Chemical Name: Sodium Hydroxide, Caustic Soda
Physical properties: white flakes, granules, shiny, color allowed, hygroscopic, soluble in water.
Chemical properties: Melting point 318.4 ℃ Boiling point 1390 ℃ The relative density of 2.130
Solubility: soluble in water, and strongly exothermic. Dissolved in ethanol and glycerol easily; insoluble in acetone, ether. Exposed on the air, it will eventually completely dissolved into solution.
Caustic soda is the most typical of the strong alkalis. Although there is no danger of it exploding or igniting, it reacts with various acids, such as hydrochloric acid, and is neutralized and generates considerable exothermic heat of neutralization.
1. It corrodes metals, such as aluminum, tin, and zinc. During this process, it generates hydrogen, which has the potential to behave as an explosive gas.
2. It is highly hygroscopic, and absorbs the moisture, carbon dioxide, or sulfur dioxide in the air. It is also highly deliquescent and absorbs moisture to form an aqueous solution.
3. When liquid caustic soda is diluted, it generates a considerable amount of heat of dilution. Since this rapidly generates strong heat and the resulting solution may spatter if the water is carelessly poured into it, care must be taken.
4. Caustic soda easily decomposes animal fibers. Although plant fibers are also decomposed, they have a higher resistance than animal fibers. Although materials resistant to corrosion by caustic soda include stainless steel, steel-epoxy resins, and fiber-reinforced plastics, steel and rubber-lined steel are the most frequently used.
Caustic soda (Sodium hydroxide) is achromatic and transparent solution, its proportion is 1.291. The solid Sodium hydroxide is white solid or pieces,
its proportion is 2.13, show alkali character, having strong causticity to skin, weaves and sheet. In the air it will absorb the carbon dioxide and change
into sodium carbonate. The solid Sodium hydroxide has strong moisture absorption character, so it must stored protecting against the tide and isolating air.
Used as a raw material in the manufacturing of soaps, detergents, textiles and paper. Also, in water softening and treatment,
drilling mud in oil field, refining petroleum products, in sanitation, hygiene products. In food and drug industry, it is used as acidity regulator,
alkali, impregnant's pigment.
